Dismantled and renumbered (SS 08)

This car is the second master piece of the Campogalliano history, after the Paris presentation GT 005 car. GT 008 is not a real Supersport version but an EB110 GT prototype used as a cosmetic mule for the Supersport version. For the first time, side mirrors show their definitive shape (mirror arm shorter and inclined rearwards), the GT front bumper has the same design but volumes are quite differents, the rear spoiler and the "window in window" system are in definitive configurations. In the same way, the GT 008 BBS rims will be use for the production version of the Supersport, as the interior and the rear lights with thin stripes. Contrariwise, the sill's door is still high, typical from early GT prototypes. More, the body front panel rear the front wheel has not the vertical opening for brake aeration, characteristic of production SS models, the lateral plate rear the lateral window has 9 holes instead of the 5 ones for the definitive model, the rear window is a translucid plate with 2 giants Naca air intakes, the back air wing is a static one, with a central dual pods. More, the front spoiler is not a definitive Supersport one since it lacks the side deflectors.
The EB110 SS (SS for Supersport but the term Sport Stradale also appeared in official Bugatti booklets) is the lightweight version of the standard GT, with 200 kg less on the weighing balance and 50 hp more. The supersport version is the star of many magazines and photoshoots in 1992. During its early life, the #39008 prototype is characterized by 4 screw holes on the front bonnet's corners.

March 5th, 1992: Geneva, the first public appearence of the GT 008 car, shown nearby GT 005.
In may 1992, GT 008 was used for the opening of the F1 GP in Monaco (with GT 005) and for an official presentation to the Prince Rainier and his son Albert, by JM Borel.
A great photoshoot was realized in the Alps during this period, with wonderfull pictures of GT 008 running with GT 005.
Summer 1992 : the Bugatti team was running with GT 008 on the Nurburgring track (Germany) for testing, with Jean Philippe Vittecoq as driver.
September 15th, 1992 : Unveiling of the Ora Bugatti center (Italy), an entity specialized in the sale of products to the effigy of Bugatti. The GT 008 car was exhibited near a Bugatti T57 Stelvio and a mysterious blue EB110 GT fitted with SS rims.
Early october, 1992. Mondial of Paris, the french motorshow. On the side of the GT prototype GT 011, the Supersport prototype GT 008 was exhibited with many technical and cosmetic evolutions. The screw holes on the front bonnet were replaced by quick couplers, rims are now black tainted, the side mirrors were removed and replaced by small blue racing mirrors, fixed on the door pillar, a large Bugatti sticker is placed on the windshield. Some sponsor stickers sprinkled the body and slick tires emphased the racing connotation given to the EB110 SS.
December , 1992. The Bologna Motorshow (Italy)
Original side mirrors recovered their position on the car.
March 1993.
Geneva Motorshow (Switzerland) : the GT 008 was exhibited one more time in Geneva, with the same configuration than in Bologna..
Considering the new speed attempt in Nardo previoused on may 1993, GT 008 was under development at the factory and at the Pininfarina wind tunnel. The aerodynamic package of the Supersport was under consideration and one of the major esthetical trait of the Supersport prototype was deeply modify : the back air wing with central dual pods was replaced by an adjustable spoiler, positioned lower on the back of the car. The engine bonnet with the Naca air intakes was replaced by a GT one, with a classic window and at last, a the plastic plate between the rear lights was colored in black. The 29 of may in Nardo (Italy), Jean Philippe Vittecoq initiate the performance tests for the homologation with a very lightweight GT 008 (racing interior, no front and rear lights for example).
The EB110 explodes the records and the Supersport becomes the fastest car of the world:
- 0 to 100 km/h : 3,26 s
- 400 m : 10,9 s
- 1000 m : 19,61 s (speed : 276,5 km/h)
- Top speed : 351 km/h
The Nardo test is the swan song for the GT 008, who suffered during the exercise. The carbon chassis, subjected to extreme and unusual temperatures, was damaged in the engine compartment, under the exhaust manifold.
The C9 was sent to Salaunes (France) in the Composite Aquitaine factory, in order to be dismantled and repaired.
Surprisingly, this refurbishment of GT 008 was an opportunity for Bugatti to complete the transformation of C9 into a true Supersport model. Since then, the GT 008 was renumbered in SS 08, and its complete chassis number was modified accordingly (ZA9BB02E0PCD39008).
End of the story for the GT 008 but renaissance for a new career since the SS 08 will be used as a rolling laboratory to develop a competition version of the EB110.
