The Bugatti history was not made only with sportcars but also with luxury and prestige, and four door cars based on Type 46 or 41 chassis were parts of the legend. In 1992, a partnership was formed with Giugiaro (Ital Design) in order to expand the Bugatti range without affecting the image of the brand. A project of a 4 passengers luxury limousine, in the tradition of the Royale, was initiated with the famous italian designer Giorgietto Giugiaro for the design of the car and its assembly. Conerning the mechanical parts, Campogalliano has planned to take the all wheel drive system from the EB110 and to develop a new engine, an atmospheric 6,0 liter V12 block with 5 valves per cylinder, set up for a greater flexibility compared to the quaditurbo 3,5 liter V12.
In mid 1992, a large delegation of the Bugatti staff (JM. Borel, G. Benedini, T. Benedetti, M. Barbieri and O. Pedraazi) met Giugiaro in Moncalieri near Turin, at the Ital Design office, in order to fix some technical specifications.
The engine will be located in front central position, within the wheelbase, to promote perfect counter-balancing of rear weights and improved driving stability. Changes in the distribution were intended to make the mechanics quieter. The aluminium bodyshell and carbon chassis represented a break-through for this type of vehicle.

The body shape of the Bugatti EB112 was born at the Ital Design studio and the first materialization was an Epowood 1:1 mock up, painted in mushroom grey. The model was used in pictures for Ital Design promotion, featuring Giugario and Artioli. The style was set according to this mock up.
